A reader's delight. I greatly enjoyed this book. The author pulled me right into the story and kept me turning the pages wanting to know what would happen next from the moment the main character makes a fateful decision on the train.The storyline definitely had some surprises I wasn't expecting at all, but that worked each time, and moved the plot forward well.
While I admit I doubt there would be such a women's group in a relatively small, obscure town such as that one, I was willing to put aside my disbelief on that one issue.
I certainly wasn't expecting the twist near the end. I never guessed it at all.
I would recommend this novel for anyone who likes mystery and intrigue.

Absolutely loved this book as I have every other story Ms. Mclachlan has written.
This book kept me very interested, until the end. The ending was very sudden and anticlimactic. And it's probably just me, but I don't think that everything was tied up neatly in the end. I'm not sure exactly what happened. The characters and relationships could have been better developed. There were multiple plot twists that I didn't see coming, and some I did. All in all, this was an interesting book but not a particularly good one, in the end.
3.5 stars. This was a good story wasted. The historical theme, with an abused woman trying to make a new life in a small western town, promised to be really entertaining, but novel was far too short for the plot.The characters were interesting, but weren't as well developed as they should have been. If you blinked you would have missed the love scene. The price of the book was far too high for the length of book. To sum up...if this novel was a hundred pages longer it would have been great. As it was written, I don't think it's value for money.
I love this book. Kate McLachlan is one of my favorite writers. Funny, well thought out, suspenseful and the city and time period piece is spot on.
This is some of McLachlan's best writing. It's an adventure into the past world of Lesbians written like only she can...as if she were there. Fast and fun it keeps you engaged from the first page to the last.
